About MenAsWell
MenAsWell is the Dutch expertise center addressing sexual violence against men, trans, and non-binary individuals. We raise awareness, provide direct support, and advocate for systemic change in order to ensure equal recognition, care, and protection for male+ survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence.
Our board consists of a Chair, Treasurer, and advisors with expertise relevant to our mission. The board provides strategic oversight, approves budgets, supports the Director, and, where needed, mediates high-level complaints or conflicts.
Role of the Chair
As Chair of the Board, you will play a vital role in strengthening MenAsWell’s governance, visibility, and influence at both the national and municipal level. You will ensure the board functions effectively, provide oversight to the Director, and help steer the organisation toward sustainable growth and federal recognition.
This position is particularly significant at this stage of MenAsWell’s development: the Chair will help shape our advocacy for structural funding from the Ministries of OCW and VWS, and will ensure that MenAsWell remains survivor-led, trauma-informed, and politically impactful.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Governance
Provide clear leadership to the Board and ensure its effective functioning.
Oversee the work of the Director, providing guidance and accountability while respecting operational autonomy.
Ensure compliance with governance and legal standards for Dutch non-profits.
Strategy & Advocacy
Contribute to MenAsWell’s long-term strategy and ensure alignment with the mission and values.
Leverage political and policy connections to strengthen MenAsWell’s advocacy and funding opportunities.
Support the organisation in securing structural/federal funding, particularly through OCW and VWS.
Stakeholder Engagement
Represent MenAsWell at high-level meetings with policymakers, funders, and sector partners.
Act as an ambassador for MenAsWell’s mission in public and political spaces.
Strengthen partnerships with municipalities, NGOs, and survivor-led organisations.
Oversight & Mediation
Monitor organisational risks and ensure robust financial and ethical governance.
Mediate high-level complaints or conflicts when required, safeguarding MenAsWell’s reputation and survivor trust.
Key Requirements
Demonstrated leadership experience in governance or strategic roles.
Strong understanding of sexual violence against men, trans, and non-binary people, including the specific needs of trauma survivors and the LGBTQIA+ community.
Proven political or policy connections, with the ability to lobby effectively for systemic change.
Familiarity with Dutch government structures, particularly OCW and VWS.
Commitment to survivor-led, trauma-informed, and feminist values.
Strong interpersonal skills, impartiality, and ability to build consensus.
What We Offer
A unique leadership role in a pioneering organisation tackling an underrepresented issue in the Netherlands.
The opportunity to influence national policy and funding structures for male+ survivors.
A committed, diverse, and mission-driven team and board.
Tenure of 2 years (negotiable), with the possibility of renewal.
Practicalities
This is an unpaid governance role in line with Dutch non-profit practice.
Time commitment: approx. 6–8 hours per month (board meetings, political engagement, strategic support).
Location: Amsterdam-based, with national advocacy responsibilities.
